Neochori is built at the foot of Mount Voulkanos very close to Meligala. It has about 210 inhabitants who are engaged in agriculture and livestock farming. Neochori was founded in 1862 by residents of nearby villages and from Alonistaina of Arcadia. Inside Neochori you can see the old stone-built school, the square with the fountains and the church of Apostles Peter and Paul. There is also the abandoned house of Maria Callas’ father, who ran a pharmacy in Meligala.
The most important attraction of the area, however, is the bridge of Mavrozoumaina, the oldest functioning bridge in Europe, built in 369 BC by the Theban general Epaminondas. At a distance of about 800m from Neochori is the historic Pigada, from the battle of Meligalas in 1944 between resistance fighters and battalion soldiers, where a huge cross and a monument with the names of those who were executed have been erected, while finally near the village is the Old Monastery of Vulkanos, on the top of Mount Ithomi and the Ancient Messina.
