The village of Kakaletri is located at the northeastern end of Messinia and is built on a verdant hillside at an altitude of 700 meters above the valley of the river Neda. On the hill to the south of the village, remains of fortifications and a settlement have been found and it is believed that the acropolis of ancient Eira, the city founded by the rebellious Messenians, led by Aristomenes, was located there.
Today in Kakaletri, where about 40 people live permanently, you will find a small coffee shop in the village square. Three km south of the village, you will find the stone chapel of Panagia Kakaletri, at the base of which there is a spring with cold water. In the courtyard of the church there is a recreation area with benches and plenty of coolness from the dense vegetation and the Neda river that runs just below it.
