Dorio is a head village that is also known by the older name of Kato Soulima. It was built in 1900 by the inhabitants of the most mountainous village of Soulima (today’s Ano Dorios), who settled further south in a more privileged position that flourished with the arrival of the railway. The inhabitants of these areas trace their origins back to Albanian-speaking tribes who settled in the 14th century in these villages known as Sulimochoria.
The name is due to the ancient city of Dorio mentioned in the Iliad among the cities that made up the Kingdom of Nestor. Finds from excavations at the nearby archaeological site of Malthi are identified by some with the prehistoric Dorio. Today the settlement has developed into a commercial centre of the region and has public services, schools and shops.
