Diavolitsi is a picturesque town with about 700 inhabitants. The traditional stone houses and the railway station with its beautiful square and cafes characterize the area with a lively social and economic life. The area is dominated by the church of the Transfiguration, built in 1861. Next to it, an open theatre with a capacity of 250 seats was built in 2009 at the expense of Captain Vassilis Konstantakopoulos, who came from the village.

According to tradition, Diavolitsi owes its name to a Byzantine official. The wider area has been identified by archaeologists with the ancient city of Andania, capital of Messinia from the time of its mythical founder, Polycaon, until the invasion of the Dorians. There the Mysteries of Andania were celebrated, which according to Pausanias was the second most important religious festival after the Eleusinian Mysteries.
