The small village of Kakaletri is located at the northeastern end of Messinia and is built on a verdant hillside, at an altitude of 700 meters, above the valley of the river Neda. To the south of the village, remains of fortifications and a settlement have been found and it is believed that the acropolis of ancient Eira, the city founded by the rebellious Messenians, led by Aristomenes, was located there.
The long sides are 360 metres long, while the width of the acropolis is 130 metres. The total length of the walls is 960 metres and the total area of the acropolis is estimated at about 44 hectares. Two entrance gates are found in the citadel, which have been constructed in such a way that a narrow corridor with walls on both sides is created. The reason behind this construction is strategic since the existence of this narrow corridor prevented the entrances from being attacked by a large number of opponents.
