The river Neda is located on the border of the prefectures of Ilia and Messinia. It originates from Mount Lykaeus, flows westwards and empties into the Ionian Sea between the coasts of Kyparissia and Zacharo. It takes its name from the nymph Neda, who, according to Greek mythology, was a water deity and one of those who raised Zeus. Near the banks of the river stood the ancient Figalia and the temple of Apollo Epicurus at Vasses.
Along its course it crosses a beautiful 32 km long gorge with narrow passages and waterfalls where small natural lakes are formed. The constant changes in the landscape, the rich vegetation, the turquoise waters and the imposing rocks make the route of the gorge an unforgettable experience for the traveller.
