The village of Kato Melpia is a beautiful green picturesque village with many running waters, which is built at the foot of the mountain Tetrazi. According to historical data, the first houses were built in 1260 BC at the site of Grebeni, above the springs of Koube ,when Nestor was king in ancient Pylos.

In 612 BC the area was inhabited by the Alcmaeonites, who had been exiled by the Athenians because they were considered responsible for the death of Cyclon, who named the city Galazion. “Polis Galazion esti” read the marble inscription found there in 1940. In 748 AD the village was renamed Garanja by the Slavs (which means security in their language) and in 1927 the village was renamed, once again, to Melpia, its current name.
